Fields of Gold
Fields of Gold is described as sunshine in a field where thousands of blooming sunflowers are able to bring joy and positivity to any and all of its visitors.
Owned by Stephanie and Jakob Vogel, the field was originally bought from Jakob’s parents as a corn and bean cash crop. They then took a year off from the corn and beans to try and find something more interesting to them. During the pandemic, they used their time to rethink what they wanted and happened across some inspirations from Instagram. What started off as a silly suggestion from Stephanie, immediately became a yes from Jakob. Their next step was to stop renting the land to other farmers and to take it upon themselves to plan their own sunflowers. They say this idea was successful right off the bat and they have spent a lot of their time since then thinking of ways to better and add to the experience.
In the fall, they use the sunflower seeds as bird feed and have a pumpkin patch, corn maze and spooky sunflower walk. They plan on beginning some beekeeping over the course of the year and having some honey by the fall as well. They have also noticed many couples getting engaged in their fields, for this reason they have some proposal packages in the works. A picnic area in the field is also on their to-do list for the year.
Though they both work full-time off the farm, they still find the time to do all that needs doing. Stephanie says she is the idea factory and her husband is the executor. She manages social media and interacts with their clients and he, as an agricultural expert, does the research and connects with local growers. She loves to hear people's stories, their view on sunflowers and what their meaning is to them.
Eastern Ontario Training Board
The Eastern Ontario Training Board is a one-stop shop for anything "workforce development" for SDG PR and Akwesasne. They work with employers, jobseekers, learners and newcomers.
They ensure access to quality local labour market information, engage employers to help identify skill gaps, employment opportunities and training needs; support stronger linkages among employment service providers and help jobseekers obtain skills and training to become employed. The agency also addresses the needs of newcomers to our community, including individuals who have moved to the Cornwall area from other communities and countries.
The EOTB has been a champion for local labour force development in the counties of Prescott, Russell, Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry and Akwesasne for nearly 25 years. The mandate of the EOTB has remained consistent since the agency was incorporated in 1998.
Martha Woods says her history with the Eastern Ontario Training Board (EOTB) began over 15 years ago; she handled the agency's day-to-day activities, alongside a handful of co-workers. She had a vision for the EOTB from the beginning, and when the Executive Director's position became available in 2017, she was able to take on this new role. The organization has since grown significantly. They now employ 15 staff members who contribute to the administration and success of a dozen projects which have had a demonstrated impact on the workforce in the area.
Their Local Market Information (LMI) Help Desk can help answer any questions employers or jobseekers may have related to local LMI. This service can answer questions such as:
